Cheaper Furniture for Home renovating ideas

I have noticed in my area, the Nunawading region, some six furniture stores out of sixteen, in Whitehorse road, at Nunawading have closed.  This suggests a glut of furniture, recently, a few new stores have reopened, but they are all at the discount end. There are some excellent  furniture sales, as I note the opening of the Super AMart has a $2,000 rebate, see www.SuperAMart.com.au   While Fantastic Furniture has a Home lot deal from,  for as low as $1,999.  Other sharp deals can be pursued via www.clearancecentre.valiant.com.au offering up to 75 % off or www.DirectBuy.com.au, or secondhand furniture at www.UsedVictoria.com some 40% off, or other second hand furniture at www.exhotelfurniture.com.au, www.bevmarks.com.au or Hughes Renovators Paradise at www.hughesonline.com.au  or www.discountdirect.com.au

Electrical Appliances where one can save Electricity, while home renovating.

There are several high energy use (inefficient) electrical appliances, where one can save heaps.  These include the Hot Water Electric Kettle, Tumble clothes dryer, Dishwasher, refridgerator, Electric oven, Electric hot plates, Electric Air Conditioner, Electric Hot water heater, Idle computer and Printer time.  These are the high use appliances. I suspect with the likely rises in electricity prices we will all be carefully considering the use of the above appliances, checking their Energy Star ratings.
I know there are excellent efficient appliances in Europe. I anticipate these appliances will be imported here.
I am moving several appliances to gas wherever possible. Who can predict the return of the gas refrigerator? Lets look at American home electricity use of close to 11,400 KWh annually, given a low cost of  12 cents a Kilowatt, produces a total cost of $1,324 a year.  While in Australia, the average home uses 6,570 KWh at close to 20 cents per KWh, giving an electricity bill of around $1,314 a year. Australian living standards are around a third lower than the USA. I am expecting the average Australian electricity bill to double over the next four years.

States raise Utility charges effects homes

Today, all the Australian States raised their Utility charges, Electricity, Gas, Water, some a bit, many a lot. Including the Water and Electricity charges by up to 25 %
Herald “Sun notes these charges have risen by close to 100% over the last ten years. I am making a bold prediction these same Utility charges will rise by close to 100% over the next four years.

What can one do ?

research help ideas at www.goswitch.com.au
www.sustainabilityvictoria.vic.gov.au
www.savingsguide.com.au

Well I suggest one read my Environmental posts and implement these ideas. Lets not be too relaxed, as these  utility charges will keep rising for several years. I reckon its all  been decided in secret COAG Council of  Australian  government meetings. As the Australian States cant raise new taxes, well just raise existing taxes!

Extra taxes on the Miners, effect on Home Renovating

The new Mining Resources Super tax, will initially apply to Coal and Iron Ore miners, while low margin miners like, sands, gravel and Limestone are exempt.   This will still put up most  building products prices, everything that uses Steel, like Concrete reinforcing and everything that uses Energy like Aluminium frames, Steel and Glass.
So in the Home renovating field, there will be plenty of price rises.  The devil will be in the detail, and of course it will need to be modified and renegotiated through the  Australian Senate. So its not all a done deal. I believe its half a deal with more modifications due after an Election. As  I understand it the Mining tax will gradually replace State based Royalties. The Terasury has written paper on the expectation of a future rapid rise in Minerals prices.
