Australia’s Electric car when ?

‘I have been reading about Australia’s Electric car, the Blade. And when might this be available? I hear you ask, well right here, right now. In fact, its been available since February 2008. Given the cost of a charge at $1.50 for a 100 Km, and the convenience of plug in recharge. I am suprized only 30 or so have been sold. Now the State government and many councils have ordered these cars. The public can buy the second hand models at a reasonable price.

Let me detail the advantages, cheap to run, Zero emissions, Quiet to drive, cheap to service and great reliability.The cars are made locally in Castlemaine, Victoria, as a conversion of the popular lightweight Hyundai Getz. There are plenty of us waiting for the great range of brand new car models like the GM Volt , the ECC, the Smart car, the Nissan Leaf or Chinas Chery. Electrical Appliances where one can save Electricity, while home renovating.

There are several high energy use (inefficient) electrical appliances, where one can save heaps. These include the Hot Water Electric Kettle, Tumble clothes dryer, Dishwasher, refridgerator, Electric oven, Electric hot plates, Electric Air Conditioner, Electric Hot water heater, Idle computer and Printer time. These are the high use appliances. I suspect with the likely rises in electricity prices we will all be carefully considering the use of the above appliances, checking their Energy Star ratings.
I know there are excellent efficient appliances in Europe. I anticipate these appliances will be imported here.
I am moving several appliances to gas wherever possible. Who can predict the return of the gas refrigerator? Lets look at American home electricity use of close to 11,400 KWh annually, given a low cost of 12 cents a Kilowatt, produces a total cost of $1,324 a year. While in Australia, the average home uses 6,570 KWh at close to 20 cents per KWh, giving an electricity bill of around $1,314 a year. Australian living standards are around a third lower than the USA. I am expecting the average Australian electricity bill to double over the next four years.

New electric Cars effect on Home Renovating

I am reading here of a Japanese Electric car, which has been driving on an Australian economy run. This is to address the prominent issue, that Electric cars are considered to have a short driving range. The car has completed a 1000 km trip on one charge. This is the equivalent of a drive from Sydney to Brisbane. In Europe, apparently we have available the Mutsubishi Imiev, the Smart Electric car and the Electric Car Company, ECC conversion of a Citroen C 1 class. These are all quite small economy cars with a short driving range, before recharging. The implication for home renovating, is that the car based urban sprawl can continue. Any imperative to be within easy walking distance to tram or train will be reduced. I suggest the key element is the heavy and expensive batteries, costing close to $12,000. These are expected to fall in cost to $3,000 as the car companies ramp up volume production lines. There is also an Electric Motor Bike with terrific economy. It is not yet commercially released.

States raise Utility charges effects homes

Today, all the Australian States raised their Utility charges, Electricity, Gas, Water, some a bit, many a lot. Including the Water and Electricity charges by up to 25 %
Herald “Sun notes these charges have risen by close to 100% over the last ten years. I am making a bold prediction these same Utility charges will rise by close to 100% over the next four years.

What can one do ?

Well I suggest one read my Environmental posts and implement these ideas. Lets not be too relaxed, as these utility charges will keep rising for several years. I reckon its all been decided in secret COAG Council of Australian government meetings. As the Australian States cant raise new taxes,well just raise existing taxes!

Electricity prices to rise, effect on homerenovating

Just been alerted to the Wholesale prices of Electricity rising by up to six times; apparently to pay for an upgrading of the safety and security of the power lines system, after the disastrous fires of last year.
While initially, this wont impact at the retail level, who am I kidding ?
It must impact, one still has time to adjust. Perhaps this is highlighted by the Smart Meter board being be delivered to all homes. This will allow one to monitor your power use and adjust your power use accordingly, during the day; Power will be priced by each fifteen minute block. During the evening peak, while cooking and heating the home, from 4 PM to 9 PM, electric power is likely to be heaps more expensive. We will all adjust, by putting on the washing or computer downloads at night. Companies will adjust by switching from coal power stations to gas fired.
I anticipate a big switch. These are things I am doing, switch to gas heating and cooking, solar hot water, clothes rack clothes drying, using the TV as the computer, double glazing windows, retiring early in winter, investigation of efficient imported Appliances. Like the refrigerator from Turkey which is 90% more efficient than, ones available in Australia.

Victorian Water bills to rise dramatically

I am studying the rise in water Bills from the 1/07/2010 many bills will rise between 10 % to 20 % each year. I expect this to continue a compounding basis: over four years water bills could double from an average of $700 to $1400 annually per home. Private sources advise me that this rise and rate of rise is extremely likely, as the government uses water prices as an indirect form of taxation.
This is to pay for the very expensive Desalination plant at Wonthaggi, and the Pipeline from Lake Eildon to Maroondah.

The running cost of the Desal plant will be expensive to run and finance, it is reliant on a wind power plant being built for the electricity, too. So we have to pay for the wind power station, too.

There are ways to cut your water bill, as set out in my prior post. Every Victorian family will soon be made acutely, aware of the water saving measures of Tanks, taps, Dual flush systems, aerated taps, grey water systems, even rock lawns.

Home renovating water efficiency measures

The expected move to pricing water by the Kilolitre will draw close attention to the price of water; in Victoria this is due from 1/07/2010. One can apply some easy home renovating solutions to reduce your water bill.
1 Save 2,000 litres a year in the Kitchen, with aerated water taps.
2 Save 18,250 a year with efficient shower heads and short showers.
3 Save 5,000 litres in the garden with an efficient hand held spray nozzle.

4 Save 16,000 litres a year in the laundry with a frontloader washing machine.

5 Save 20,300 litres a year with an efficient Dual flush toilet system.
This gives grand total of 61,550 litres saved year.
This represents around the daily allowance for a single person in the household.
Obviously, a close check of the Water Savings WELLS ratings is going to payoff handsomely for all your appliance puchases. I have recently, installed a watertank to capture the rain from the roof. I must consider connecting to the Water Closets, as this would be a massive saving. If I get excited I might even install a grey water system to tend to the garden. This would include an underground agricultural pipe filtered watering system. Just installed the Front Loader washing machine, today.

More Ideas for the Electric Cars

The Nissan Leaf is Coming

While the first car available the Mitsubishi Imiev is due this year and the Nissan Leaf next year.

For many people the short driving range of 160 Km is a considered a problem. Apparently this will be dealt with, by battery changing stations, you wont have to recharge over six hours, just swap your batteries.

The RACV is working with Better Place the battery charging company. Expectations are high with China expected to be making a million cars bt 2012 the BYD car company could be the worlds largest by production volume within five years. The roll out of Battery Change stations is to begin in California, next is Canberra, no doubt to attract the attention of Politicians.

Implications for home renovators include the car culture will continue, one wont have to restrict your property choice to “easy public transport access”.

Rising price for water, effect on home renovating

Received my latest water bill, with the note Water Prices are to double over the next four years. In order to encourage me they are moving to volume charging for water, from the the first of July. “In order to encourage , me they are saying, Its all part of the Plan, to fund crucial water saving projects”, like the $5.8 Bn Desal plant and the Sugarloaf/Lake Eildon water pipe. Hope they aren”‘t stealing water from the farmers? One is critically aware the Desalination plant will cost a fortune to run on electricity. Queensland water price s up 10% today, am sure most States will keep in close alignment. Excuse is its to fund the recent $9 Bn in new water projects. V ictora” s announcement is due on 1/7/2010. Solar Power systems update on home renovating

Australia’s Silex Solar systems, has taken over the long established BP Solar power company. This keeps valuable expertise and research technology in Australia. Where some progress is being made in the efficiency of Solar Panels energy conversion, which is currently regarded as quite low.

The rate of take up of solar power on the roof has accelerated. It is still way behind that of Germany where some 2,500 MW capacity has been installed. While Australia has around 115 MW.
Given the new State based REC trading system one can earn from the power, by feeding back into the electricity system. Famously, A Cooper from Berowa, has been earning $5,500 a year on this feed back system. I have recently, installed a larger 3 KW system. It should offestt my entire bill and might even generate some feedback income.
