Top tips, Renovating your Bathroom, via easy home renovating

May 30, 2011 by Tim

Today’s bathrooms are no longer the smallest room in the house. People are looking for relaxation and pampering. Here are some important tips to consider when redesigning your bathroom.

Bathroom 2

Choose a feature for your bathroom

Choose which design item you want to feature in the bathroom and then work the rest of the bathroom design around it. A beautifully curved hand bowl set into a minimalist vanity unit with a mirror as a backdrop, a sensuously curved bath placed in the middle of the room, a walk in shower with vibrant tiling or a sunken bath surrounded by quality tiling can all be used as features.

Sit in a bathtub before buying it

Bigger isn’t always better. A 60-inch tub is fine for most people. It offers enough room to stretch out and provides a secure foothold, so you don’t float into oblivion when the tub is full. Assess the angled back and lip for comfort and neck support – a tub for two people slants at either end and has taps in the middle. A contoured bath not only provides extra comfort and support but can also up to 30 litres of water. A spa bath can provide the perfect environment to rejuvenate sore and tired muscles or just chill out with a glass of wine.

Select durable flooring

Ceramic, marble and stone tiles are all excellent durable and water-resistant choices for a bathroom. Sub-floor heating coils will make these hard surfaces warm. Well-sealed hardwood floors offer natural warmth and act as a contrast for other harder, cold surfaces in a bathroom.

Use a mirror to add space

One beautifully framed mirror over a sink is more attractive than many surfaces covered with mirror. Supplement it with a wall-mounted adjustable makeup mirror, and consider installing a lighted, mirrored shaving niche in your shower stall.

Use hidden space

Take advantage of space between wall studs by recessing a tall storage cabinet into the wall to maximise storage while saving floor space. The cabinet should have an interior depth of at least three inches.

Build a shower area

Consider building an open-concept shower area that doesn’t need a curtain or door and is less confining than a standard shower stall. In addition to well-designed drainage, a ceiling-mounted rain shower-head and/or a high wall-mounted shower-head that splashes less water will keep the area outside the shower drier.

Share space for added function

In homes with back-to-back bathrooms, a shared shower with access doors to each of the bathrooms maximises limited space. Or turn a closet located next to a bathroom into a small en-suite with access to the neighbouring bath.

Design lighting that is functional and creates atmosphereBasins

Good lighting is imperative. Combine halogen pot lights with wall sconces beside or over the mirror for lighting with no shadows. Consider installing dimmers.

Purchase a quality toilet

When buying a toilet, it’s not necessary for you to spend a lot of money. You can get a good-quality one-piece toilet for about $600. Models with elongated bowls and seats are usually most comfortable.

Incorporate luxury into your room

If you’re fortunate enough to have a lot of work space to work with, indulge yourself with a bathroom that includes a dressing room- a haven for privacy and relaxation. Outfit your bathroom with a television, fireplace, excercise equipment, makeup vanity and even a large comfortable occasional chair.

A Bathroom renovation is design intensive!

May 24, 2011 by Tim

Household bathrooms are unique in the sense that on a square meter basis they are perhaps the most design and capital intensive rooms that one can renovate. As such it is worthwhile to take into account the following considerations:

  • Take time to assess how your current bathroom layout does or doesn’t work for your household, i.e. consider traffic patterns –when is the bathroom busiest? How many people use the room at one time?
  • Don’t be shy to play around with the positioning of fittings if your current bathroom layout is not working for you. In most cases the fittings are easily moved within the confines of the bathroom. To some extent it is also relatively easy to alter the structure of the room, i.e. move walls, entrances etc. This is the time to consider what your ideal bathroom will look like.
  • Take time to view friends and relatives bathrooms and decide what elements of those you like (and dislike). There are also a number of worthwhile publications to browse for inspiration, i.e.Urbis, InsideOut, NZ Life & Liesure, Trends, Kitchens & Bathrooms Quarterly, Habitat, NZ Home & Garden etc.
  • Establish a budget. This is perhaps the most difficult aspect of planning your new bathroom but unless you have a limitless supply of money it is also the most important factor governing your renovation project. Your designer will work within the parameters of your budget and will keep you on track throughout the entire design phase.

bathroom renovation renovate bathroom modern bathroom

A modern bathroom makes it a joy to get up in the morning. There are any number of interesting products and finishes to choose from. In fact there are so many that it can be bewildering and easy to overspend on the wrong things. It’s useful to distinguish between ‘back of wall’ like valves, pipes and other plumbing systems and ‘front of wall’ like cabinets, taps and showerheads. Many showers and taps will only work well if the right ‘back of wall’ systems are installed.

Bathroom budgets often blow out because they are complex projects with multiple, expensive sub trades involved. Like kitchens it’s not the cabinetry and products that drive the costs, it’s the other building work and efficient management of the sub trades that makes the difference. A bathroom company will help make tradeoff decisions and then manage the complete renovation project. Getting some help from the Refresh designer will help take pain out of the process and ensure your design choices are all co-ordinated and create a modern design outcome.
